IDW's unique take on the Transformers sees a back to basics approach, as once more the Autobots and Decepticons truly become 'robots in disguise'. They are among us, here and now, but the populace is largely unaware of their presence or their terrifying intentions. Phase One has begun..!

In 1984 (1984!? Damn I feel old…) , Marvel UK had a problem. The monthly issues of their US parent company's Transformers comic were not providing enough material for the fortnightly (and later weekly) UK version of the comic. The solution? They started to weave their own accounts of our favourite mechanoids in and around the US stories. Initially the UK tales were limited in scope, but soon writer Simon Furman began to pen epics that captured the imagination of a generation of children and turned the Transformers UK into a best selling smash. Later on some of these kids grew up (or not!) and wrote a really rather good online guide to this series. Please click above to access our take on what we consider to be the definitive version of the original Transformers comic continuity. Ahthankyou. (Please note - this section includes all Marvel US comic stories, including the Headmasters and Transformers/Gi-Joe mini-series.)

They're back! Well for a bit anyway. Following on directly from the end of the original Marvel series came 12 issues of high octane, galaxy spanning, big bloody robot action. Introducing the threat of the nasty Cybertronian Empire as well as further insight into the history of the Transformers, this was the final hurrah for the original comic continuity, but it went out in style. And remember... it never ends!

Never underestimate the power of nostalgia! Nearly twenty years after the original Transformers comic series was launched by Marvel, Canadian company Dreamwave launched a new series based on the original cast. Drawing elements from both the original comic and cartoon series, the series received a mixed reaction from fans (to put it mildly) but nonetheless paved the way for another mini-series and an ongoing series, which let's face it is something we have all been dreaming of for about a decade. Click below to access our guide to Dreamwave’s Transformers: Generation 1.

Eager to tap into the fanboy dollar, Dreamwave hired popular Transformers writer Simon Furman to lay the background for their new Generation One continuity. Set millions of years in the past, before the Transformers ever came to Earth, The War Within details the triumphs and tragedies of millions of years of war on Cybertron. Or in other words: Big Robots Fighting! Yay!

An alternate telling of the Transformers story based on the newer Transformers properties from Hasbro. So far featuring Mini-Cons, Omnicons, Unicrons and Galvatrons... well, it ain't half bad as it happens. Which is nice.

Aimed at a younger audience, the UK version of Armada bore little resemblance to its superior Canadian cousin. The series was not a hit and was cancelled after nine issues, though the participation of fan faves Simon Furman, Andy Wildman and Lee Sullivan meant that many older fans picked the book up.

In an attempt to further flesh out their Transformers Universe, Dreamwave produced this series. Each issue contains detailed profiles on the entire cast of Transformer characters. So far the original Generation One characters and the Armada crew have been profiled, but more are sure to come, so watch this space. Or go away and come back later. The second option is probably more sensible actually.

Ah, nostagia cubed. In a blast from the past both Devil's Due and Dreamwave produced their own alternate reality Transformers/Gi-Joe crossovers. Dreamwave went bust before their second volume hit its stride, but that hasn't stopped Devil's Due churning 'em out. Oh joy.
